The Boston Patriots were an original team in the American Football League, as a way to get professional football back in the city. The AFL started play in 1961 and the league was so successful, they merged with the older NFL in 1970. In 1971, the team started playing in Foxboro Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, which was closer to Rhode Island than Boston, so the team changed its name to the New England Patriots. The Patriots’ last losing season was in 2000, and they have now appeared in 11 Super Bowls, winning six them, which puts them in a tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins.
